DESCRIPTION
BASF Basta Glufosinate Ammonium 13.5 % w/w SL Herbicide Details :
  • Basta is a non-selective, post emergent herbicide recommended for the control of annual & perennial weeds in Tea & Cotton. The product is very versatile and effective under different climatic conditions.
  • Technical Content : Glufosinate Ammonium 13.5 % w/w SL
FEATURES
  • Basta acts by contact action it is safer to the crops than other non-selective herbicides in directed spray.
  • It exhibits better efficacy against certain hard-to kill weed species, which are not controlled by conventional products currently being used by growers.
BENEFITS
  • Broad-spectrum: Controls broad leaf and grassy weeds
  • High Efficacy: Controls 'hard-to-kill' weeds like Borreria & Eleusine in tea gardens and other plantation crops.
  • Safety: Being a contact herbicide, Basta is relatively safer to crop when sprayed with hood as compared to the non-selective systemic herbicides.
  • It is safe to environment: No residues in soil, water and plant.
MODE OF ACTION -
  • Glutamine synthetase is the enzyme which catalyses the reaction of NH3 and glutamic acid to form glutamine. Ammonia results from nitrate reduction, amino acid metabolism and photorespiration. Glufosinate-ammonium inhibits the activity of Glutamine synthetase. This leads to the accumulation of NH3 in the cell. As NH3 is strongly phytotoxic, the affected cells die. This is macroscopically manifested in necrotic spots and finally withering of plant.
  • Wilting of exposed weeds may start within 24 hours in the tropics or only after 8 days in cool continental spring or autumn temperatures.
  • DOSAGE - 0.75 to 1.5ml/liter of water

FAQs for the product of Basta Glufosinate Ammonium 13.5% SL herbicides
1. What makes Glufosinate different from other herbicides?
Ans. Basta uses a unique contact mode of action, inhibiting the enzyme glutamine synthetase, which causes a rapid build-up of toxic ammonia in weed tissues—leading to swift plant death. This novel mechanism (Group 10) helps manage herbicide-resistant weeds.
2. Is Basta selective or non‑selective?
Ans. It's a non-selective contact herbicide—effective on a broad spectrum of weeds, including grasses, broadleaf, and resistant species—while being safe for crops when applied carefully (e.g., via directed spraying in orchards or vineyards).
3. How soon after spraying will weeds die?
Ans. You’ll typically see wilting within 24 hours under warm conditions, with full plant necrosis occurring over 1–2 weeks depending on weather.
4. Can I use Basta as a pre-harvest desiccant?
Ans. Yes—Basta is effective for pre-harvest desiccation, helping to dry down crops like peas or potatoes. It accelerates drying in ~3 days, but using it too early can harm yield or quality.
5. What is the recommended spray rate and volume?
Ans. Typical use is around 2.5–3.3 L/ha (0.25–0.33 L/acre), applied in 200–400 L water/ha, depending on crop type and weed spectrum. Always refer to the product label.
6. Is Basta effective on glyphosate-resistant weeds?
Ans. Yes, it offers a strong alternative for controlling glyphosate-resistant species like Amaranthus, Conyza, and Lolium.
7. Is Basta harmful for soil or water?
Ans. No—Basta degrades rapidly in soil via microbes and is unlikely to leach into groundwater. However, avoid drift and runoff, as it's toxic to aquatic life.
